We can change this world with words like "love" and "freedom."

Changing the World

There’s already a post on this blog explaining what The Sad Cafe Community is, but I realized I had never really explained WHY it’s called that. So here you go!

When I was a senior in college, one of the graduation traditions was a slideshow of pictures submitted by students with music playing in the background. One of those songs was called “The Sad Cafe” by The Eagles. If you don’t know the song, here are the lyrics:

Out in the shiny night, the rain was softly falling

The tracks that washed down the boulevard had all been washed away.

Out of the silver light, the past came softly calling
And I remember the times we spent
inside the Sad Cafe

Oh, it seemed like a holy place,
protected by amazing grace
And we would sing right out loud, the
things we could not say
We thought we could change this world
with words like “love” and “freedom”
We were part of the lonely crowd
Inside the Sad Cafe

Oh, expecting to fly,
we would meet on that shore in the
sweet by and by

Some of their dreams came true,
some just passed away
And some of the stayed behind
inside the Sad Cafe.

The clouds rolled in and hid that shore
Now that Glory Train, it don’t stop here no more
Now I look at the years gone by,
and wonder at the powers that be.
I don’t know why fortune smiles on some
and lets the rest go free

Maybe the time has drawn the faces I recall
But things in this life change very slowly,
if they ever change at all
There’s no use in asking why,
it just turned out that way
So meet me at midnight baby
inside the Sad Cafe.
Why don’t you meet me at midnight baby,
inside the Sad Cafe.

Our “Sad Cafe” was a “greasy spoon” open all night. We’d sit pretending to study over our burgers and fries, drinking sweet iced tea with enough caffeine to keep us up for a week. They should have asked us what to do to “fix” the world, because, Lord knows we had enough ideas and enthusiasm to save that.

So I want to recapture that sense of creativity and idealism. I want to give people a place to meet kindred spirits, and I want to give them a place to find encouragement when they need it. Hence, The Sad Cafe Community.

Now I know so even more !….besides,it’s so fitting since I love the bitter sweetness of the eagles. They just seem to reach down deep in the soul, just the feeling I get from this community…now that’s what life is all about !…much love, Dee
